Museum of the City of New York: Exhibitions
Museum of the City of New York.
This user-friendly site captures the vibrance of New York City’s architectural, social, and cultural history with its virtual exhibits, which feature selections from past and present museum exhibitions. Provides descriptions (roughly 150 words) of the scope and content of each museum and virtual exhibit. It also provides information on four ongoing exhibits and roughly 50 past museum exhibits, about 25 of which have links to virtual exhibits of selected images from that exhibition. Exhibits cover a wide variety of topics, including New York Cityscapes, Stickball, 18th-century women’s shoes, early 20th-century valentines, Berenice Abbott’s photographs, Upper Manhattan in Photographs, the Astor Place Riot, and the Federal Art Project. The site’s Research section divides the museum’s holdings into categories that include prints and photos; theater; paintings and sculpture; manuscripts; decorative arts; and costumes. Each category of holdings features approximately five images of selected items from that collection. There is a bibliography listing roughly 40 scholarly works on New York history, and the site provides over 30 links to other history museums, archives, libraries, and projects on New York’s history. The site also lists the museum’s 18 publications, six of which are online in their entirety.
