History News Service
History News Service.
Provides an archive of more than 150 “op-ed” articles dating from 1997 to the present written by “an informal syndicate of professional historians who seek to improve the public’s understanding of current events by setting these events in their historical contexts.” Subjects of these pieces—which currently run in 300 daily newspapers—range from presidential sex scandals to international arms agreements. The site also includes two annotated sample editorials with helpful compositional guidelines. Founded in 1996 and updated regularly, the service is co-directed by historians James Banner and Joyce Appleby. Of great value to teachers and students who seek to link the study of the past with present-day public concerns.

In addition to that of Madam C.J. Walker, there are collections of roughly 100 images each related to other notable Hoosiers. The website also contains a collection of more than 1,000 items related to President Lincoln, including portraits and busts of the president, as well as documents surrounding the trial of the Lincoln assassination conspirators. Other notable collections include one devoted to military history, several collections of images and portraits of Native Americans from the mid-19th century, and close to 200 historical maps of Indiana. Also offers valuable “Internet Tips” on using and evaluating websites as research sources and provides a useful case study. Includes a contest guidebook, information for educators on grants, workshops, and discussion groups with regard to the competition, links to eight games dealing with historical subjects, and a recent NHD newsletter.
