A Brief History of the Black Panther Party
Sundiata Acoli.
Written in 1985 by Sundiata Acoli, former financial officer for the Harlem Black Panther Party (BPP), this 2,000-word essay purports to present a brief history of the Party and an assessment of the positive and negative aspects of the BPP’s contribution to the Black Liberation Movement. A document of value more for the insider opinions expressed than for its limited historical narrative.

Philip B. Davis, Bright Moments.
Features illustrated biographical sketches, each approximately 400 words in length, of 12 notable 19th-century African Americans—Alexander Crummell, Frederick Douglass, Henry Highland Garnet, Harriet Tubman, Henry McNeal Turner, John Mercer Langston, Mary Elizabeth Bowser, Mary Church Terrell, Mary Ann Shadd, Nat Turner, Richard Allen, and Sojourner Truth. Includes three interactive quizzes, based on information contained in the biographies, divided into three levels of difficulty. Also provides guidelines for classroom use, including directions for setting up an “online grade book.” The site’s creators plan to add sketches and quizzes on notable 20th-century African Americans. This user-friendly site is a useful tool for introducing African-American history to young students.

The Alamo
Lamont Wood.
Devoted to the famous battle between the Mexican army and Texas forces on March 6, 1836, this site contains background information; a map of Texas in 1836; biographical sketches of William Barret Travis, Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, David Crockett, and Santa Anna; descriptions of burial sites, survivors, and the Mexican army; material on the Comanche Indians; summaries of 11 first-hand accounts; and a visual tour of the Alamo itself. More anecdotal than scholarly, this site allows visitors to search by topic, and provides links to the Discovery Channel, San Antonio’s “premier on-line shopping district,” and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library—which offers an illustrated and clearly written chronology of the Alamo as well as access to archives and related sites in Texas history.

28th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment
Don Williams.
Devoted to the 28th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, an Irish unit that fought in the Civil War, this site was created by a “historical reenactment group dedicated to preserving the memory and achievements of the men of this brave regiment who served their country faithfully in the war to save the Union.” In addition to information about contemporary reenacting, the site presents three 1862 letters from a solider in the 28th Massachusetts; a “capsule history” and a complete roster of the original regiment; and a 2,000-word history of Irish participation in the war. Also lists 12 links related to the 28th Massachusetts, as well as six links to other Irish regiments, seven links to Civil War volunteer organizations, and three links to general Civil War sites. This site will especially interest military historians.
